In 101 AC the Great Council of Harrenhal chose Viserys Targaryen to succeed his grandfather King Jaehaerys I, even though Viserys’s female cousin Rhaenys preceded him in the line of succession. Eleven years later, however, King Viserys, dismissed this precedent by disinheriting his arrogant brother Daemon in favor of his own daugher Rhaenyra.

S1 E1 / 101AC Great Council at Harrenhal ▲

In 101 AC, after the untimely deaths first of crown prince Aemon Targaryen and then his younger brother Baelon, the first ever Great Council of over a thousand lords was convened at Harrenhal in the Riverlands to determine who would become the heir of the ageing King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, grandson of Aegon the Conqueror, and succeed to the Iron Throne of Westeros. Fourteen claims were heard, the most prominent being Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, only child of Jaehaerys’s eldest son, Prince Aemon Targaryen, and Prince Viserys Targaryen, the eldest son of Prince Baelon Targaryen, the king’s most recently named heir. The council ultimately selected Viserys over Rhaenys to succeed Jaehaerys as his heir, implicitly ruling that a female claimant could not supersede a male claimant, regardless of her place in the line of succession. Viserys would ultimately become king in 103 AC, when Jaehaerys finally passed away. see external link

S1 E1 / 112AC Triarch conquest of the Stepstones ▲

In 112 AC the Triarchy—an alliance of the Free Cities of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh—invaded the Stepstones under the leadership of Myrish prince-admiral Craghas Drahar (“Crabfeeder”) and destroyed the various pirate kingdoms that had taken hold there. Although news of the conquest was initially welcomed by King Viserys I of Westeros, Corlys Velaryon, head of the royal fleet, was concerned by the power that the Triarchy now held over shipping lanes. His fears proved prophetic when, six months later, the Triarchy began attacking Westerosi ships, sinking four ships including one of the Velaryon fleet. see external link

S1 E1 / 112AC Disinheritance of Daemon Targaryen ▲

In 112 AC Queen Aema Arryn of Westeros died in childbirth and her newborn son, Baelon, soon followed, leaving a distraught Viserys I without a named heir. Learning soon after that his brother Daemon Targaryen was witnessed in a pleasure house toasting Prince Baelon as “Heir for a Day”, Viserys angrily disinherited Daemon and named his own daughter Rhaenyra as his heir instead. Although initially accepted by all the lords, this decision was controversial because it went against the precedent established at the Great Council of Harrenhal, when Viserys himself had superseded a female claimant on patrilineal grounds. see external link
