In 132 AC Lord Corlys Verlaryon won the war against the Triarchy and Dorne in the Stepstones, but returned to King’s Landing with a near-fatal wound. As Corlys’s first-born Laenor was believed dead, Lucerys Verlaryon, son of Laenor’s ‘widow’ Rhaenyra Targaryen, was seen as Corlys’s successor. However, this arrangement was disputed by Corlys’s brother Ser Vaemond, who petitioned King Viserys I to name him as heir, denouncing Lucerys as illegitimate. When Viserys reaffirmed Lucerys’s claim, Vaemond flew into a rage and was beheaded by Daemon Targaryen for insulting Rhaenyra. in wikipedia
